Make it hands-on

Sensory bin letter hunt

Fill a bin with red and pink pom-poms, paper hearts or dried beans and bury the letter tiles. Students dig out a tile, say its sound, and build a word from the Valentine’s list on the table. Watch closely with small items.

Build it before you write it

On a Read it, Make it, Write it sheet, students make each word with letter tiles, playdough, pipe cleaners or building bricks before writing it. Building the word first gives them more ways to remember it.

Plan for party day

A class party changes the routine. Show students the plan ahead of time with a visual schedule or a short social story, and keep a familiar worksheet ready for a quiet break. The familiar steps help many students, including students with autism.

Make coloring easier

Print color by word sheets at 11 x 17, use dot markers instead of crayons, or have students trace the word before coloring. A student can also point to the crayon while a partner reads the word.
